Bio:
My paintings reflect my interest in man’s effect on, and interaction with, the environment, and the interplay between public space, nature and the built world. My work is greatly influenced by my career as a landscape architect. I spent years studying and designing outdoor spaces and thinking about how people will use and connect to these spaces. In my paintings, I am no longer the designer, but the observer. Not only am I intrigued by people’s reaction to and interactions within landscape and urban spaces, but also I am interested in our built surroundings: the curve of a highway ramp, the reflection of a crane in water or the influence of topography on the development of a city. The juxtaposition of nature in contrast to an industrial site, infrastructure, or urban life, can create a very fascinating dynamic. Nature’s ability to survive and adapt within our developed world, and sometimes, dictate or deteriorate our structures, is enticing to me. While I still have a love and appreciation for ‘natural’ landscapes, I have a growing interest in the built environment, especially in industrial and urban life. My paintings are a reflection on the underlying aesthetic of the places we see, and often don't see, in our world.
I majored in Fine Art at Colorado College with an emphasis on landscape painting and earned my Masters in Landscape Architecture at University of California, Berkeley. I studied painting at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts through the Cleveland Institute of Art, in Lacoste, France, at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Aix-en-Provence, France, and at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. I have shown my work in France, Colorado and the Bay Area. I currently live and work in San Francisco. |
